Veteran s Day The armistice that was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany, took place in France at eleven o'clock in the morning the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of Today, on the 100 th anniversary of that armistice, the United States honors all people who have served in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who served during conflicts, on what is now called Veteran s Day. One image closely associated with Veteran s day is the poppy. World War I Colonel John McCrae penned the poem In Flanders Field that expressed McCrae's grief over the "row on row" of graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders' battlefields, located in a region of western Belgium and northern France and presented a striking image of the bright red flowers blooming among the rows of white crosses. McCrae's poem had a huge impact on Moina Michael from Athens, Georgia and she worked to initiate the sale of poppies as a Flower of Remembrance in the United States. Widely regarded as the official memorial flower in Europe, by 1922, poppies were being worn around the world. In Flanders Fields By John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly. Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow. Here at St. Joseph, we are remembering our veterans by supporting the Purple Heart Foundation through the Knights of Columbus. The 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus is the Patriotic degree of the Order and teaches a high and noble patriotism, instills a love of country and holds up the Constitution of our Country as the richest and most precious possession of a Knight of the Order. The Purple Heart Foundation is the fundraising engine of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Through donations, they lend support to and make direct contributions to veterans facing exceptionally difficult financial challenges. Knights will be accepting donations and passing out American flags today after all Masses. Please help us support our Veterans! Starting in Advent we will be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g our Mass times! See page 8 for details!

7 ADJUSTED MASS TIMES We are happy to announce a wonderful problem: more people are coming to Mass! However that presents us with several challenges; namely, parking lot traffic and safety of our children. To help with this, we are stretching some of our Mass times by 15 minutes to give a bit more time in between our Masses. Not only will this assist with parking and keeping children safer, but also give all parishioners time for prayer before and after Mass and time to linger and enjoy some fellowship with one another. So beginning in Advent on Sunday, December 2, our new Sunday Mass times will be: 8:00 AM 10:00 AM 12 Noon 2:00 PM (Español) 6:00 PM No other Mass times will be affected. Daily Mass will continue to be at 8:30 AM, Monday through Saturday, and Saturday Vigil Masses will continue to be held at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM (Español)
